About the Artist

Arthur Willey crafts modern studio furniture
which has a strong Shaker background as regards simplicity and functional
use, with a modern interpretation.
A North Carolina resident since 1995, Willey began his formal studies
in Rockford, Illinois in 1983 as a student of master builder Don Lippincott.
After settling in the N.C. mountains he began assembling a studio for
serious furniture making, and continued his education at Penland and
at numerous seminars on finishes and other aspects of designing and
building fine furniture. The Penland experience was led by Jere Osgood,
a recognized artist with work in various museums and private collections
and galleries, including Pritam and Eames.
A member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the Furniture Society,
the artist believes that "the grain, figure and variation in a
piece of beautiful furniture must speak in a clear and elegant voice."
